My Story

Growing up in Crete, Nebraska, I developed a strong work ethic from an early age, helping my father with antique cars and managing a large property. This experience instilled in me a keen eye for detail and a commitment to diligence; qualities that have been fundamental throughout my life.

After high school, I worked at Taco Johns in Crete, Nebraska. This phase of my life was crucial in shaping my skills in customer service and time management, which later became essential in my painting business.

I realized early on that to achieve financial independence, I needed to make a career change. This led me to Walker Manufacturing in Seward, Nebraska, where I worked as a spot welder and fork truck driver. However, a desire for something more meaningful prompted me to enlist in the United States Army at the age of 22.

My military service, from 1991 to 1997, was a transformative period in my life. Basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and subsequent assignments taught me invaluable lessons in leadership and discipline. I was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington and Hohenfels Germany where I honed my leadership skills, progressing from an E-1 private to an E-4 Specialist in less than two years. After attending a primary leadership development course, I then gained promotion to E-5 Sergeant. I managed a supply room and trained soldiers, balancing my military duties with college courses at night.

While in Germany, I underwent a significant spiritual transformation, accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I found my life when I laid it down and it continues to be the basis for which all my foundations of both business and personal influence are built. Although my time in the service was marked by several commendations and the opportunity to join the Special Forces; declining that offer to focus on my family and faith would be the 1st of many tests for properly ordering my priorities. Learning to say "No" to even good things helps us say more "Yes’s" to the great things. Being challenged to walk out this trust for provisions has upheld me and I trust it will be a part of me that both challenges and serves you well.

It was after leaving the Army that I moved to Indiana and started Matthews’ Painting Company, LLC in 1998. The leadership skills I have gained through my multi-faceted experiences have been pivotal in building my business from the ground up. Managing teams, setting high standards for quality and efficiency, and maintaining a client-focused approach were all influenced by what each industry contributed to my philosophies as an employer.

Today, as I oversee estimating, advertising, and employee leadership training in my company, each of these leadership principles continue to guide me. I focus on empowering my team and instilling a sense of ownership and pride in their work. I am hopeful that my life—enriched by my faith, family, and the lessons from my journey—continually helps shape and upholds others in their business and personal lives. I have been entrusted with ensuring I reflect the importance of resilience, leadership, and the perseverance necessary in achieving success. May it be a gift I give to any and all willing to walk this journey together.
